TIDBITS:

Current gig: Manager of the uber-successful singer singer/songwriter and biggest music export Hamdan Al-Abri from Dubai.

Words To Remember: I made my dream reality.

VISION:

When did ‘it’ become clear that this is what you wanted to do or had to do?

I have always been in love with music and arts, the rhythm, beat, lyrics, videos, visuals, dancing; it moves me like nothing else. I feel, see and understand music throughout my soul. I realized this is a career by holding my own old school hip-hop events. I could contribute to the industry and not have to be a musician, dj, producer, and dancer. There’s a variety ways to contribute and it’s been my career since the age of 18.

Can you share advice as to HOW to get ‘clear’? when do you feel the most focused?

To keep clear, I keep technology to a minimal, I don’t own a TV, which is a major distraction and North American content that is now aired on TV, has changed so much, since I have last lived here (6 years ago). I find it’s mostly degrading, depressing and I find socially unacceptable.

I feel the most focused when I’m faced with adverse situations. For example, I moved from Dubai, UAE to London, England (which I was completely foreign to) on my own, to set up “ABRI” the band that I managed and during the first month of moving over, setting up gigs, interviews, sorting out our housing, etc…

PLAN:

How did you achieve your headspace and focus? When it wanes, how do you snap back?

I believe my headspace and train of thought is part genetic and part life experiences. I was diagnosed with ADHD in my teens and was treated like a disabled person by my teachers. I realized all of the major benefits of it and recognized it’s an absolute benefit to have and if you can understand the advantages of having it you can really excel in any field.

I have gained a lot of patience throughout my travels, I deal with a lot of ego and many artists can be very dramatic. I am very relaxed in dealing with major/minor issues, put things into perspective and I face and accept all situations head on,so they don’t sit up in my head and create clutter.

the quicker you are to accept what you cannot change, the quicker you will move forward. Over the years, I have learned to control my thought process (yes we are all capable of controlling our mind), focus on what I can do, how I can change situations, work on what is possible and how I can make things happen. When things start to wane, I snapback, simply because I feel like I have get the job done, plain and simple. I work for myself, so I don’t have a safety net, security, salary, benefits, bonuses and all of the things that can allow you to wane.

Describe some of the trials and errors you’ve experienced on this journey. Why did you continue?

One, I can mention, living in the Middle East, as a music manager for a local Dubai band “ABRI” and having the singer being a native to the city/country was a major challenge/trial. Being a woman in that seat, managing a band from Dubai was unheard of, at the time.  I was the first to manage there and to manage a local band. Being a western woman in Arabia was complicated. Many people didn’t understand why they had to go through me for bookings, interviews, collaborations, photo shoots, etc.

Everything there is a process as well, there are so many rules to what can be aired on radio and TV, what can be performed, who can perform, right down to stage behaviors. I felt frustrated for the artists but I understood the rules, though it can be truly stunting to ones creativity outlet.

EXECUTE:

When did you get your first affirmation regarding this project?

When I saw our CD’s printed and shelved in Virgin megastores across the Middle East.when I got the band on the front cover of the internationally recognized TimeOut Magazine – Dubai. When we won Time Out’s Best Band of 2011 award. When I had ABRI”s music played on daytime rotation (not evening, big difference) on the nations biggest radio station – Radio 1. We created so much history in Dubai, first band from Dubai to make and break in so many ways.

How do you stay motivated?

Music motivates musicians, painting, arts, travel, photography, anything that uses and stimulates my right brain.

Why are you excited for the future?

Why should the reader be excited for theirs? It’s endless opportunities and there is endless positions to be created within it
I don’t think too far into the future, I’m more excited about the present. My life changes so rapidly being on the road, touring the world that I can just say that today is what excites me. I do set annual and quarterly goals to work towards, but being an opportunist and open to continuous growth and change that list changes quite rapidly.
Last thoughts: ( I know you didn’t ask for this, but I feel it’s special)
The only thing I can say and this is directed to artists, from the bottom of my heart. If, you are a true artist and in it for the art and not the fame, is to embrace your inner gifts and use it to your advantage in a positive light. It’s sad to see so many brilliant artists of so many talents, drown their gifts with alcohol, drugs, suicide and isolation.I do understand that fame is intense and strange, I feel fame creates ill behavior and causes death, but avoid it at all lengths, and work on your art, keep it pure and forget about the fame.
